holes

Is it possible that these two cute faces could possibly do something destructive?

Yes. Obviously, I'm less than thrilled. About a month ago, Ryan put his fist through Jared's bedroom door in a fit of "he's teasing me" anger. To fix that hole, we had to put in a whole new door! Jared & Ryan picked up the tab, of course. Nothing in our house seems to be "standard" size, so we had to have a "custom" door made. Fortunately and unfortunately our ward's stake highcouncilor owns one of the nearby hardware stores. Mark happened to run into him early one morning when he went in to order the new door. The highcouncilor recognized Mark and was very helpful -- yay! When asked what we were up to with getting a new door, Mark got to explain the incident -- a little embarrassing.
Saturday night we watched a movie together as a family and it ended a little before bedtime, so we let Matthew watch one of his movies for a few minutes. The movie is kind of long, so we had to turn it off before it ended. Matthew was NOT a happy camper. He started in on a tantrum that landed him in his room with a closed door. He didn't like the closed door, so he opened it and slammed it back against the wall. The door stop had already been bent out of shape a bit by the tantrums of past 2 year old boys, so it couldn't handle the force. It buckled and allowed the door knob to smash through the wall. We now have a lovely doorknob size hole in the wall that I will need to patch. Not only will the patch be a pain, but I don't have any matching paint to use on the wall (I mixed up the color myself and used every last drop when I painted a few years ago!) Lovely. We'll probably end up repainting the whole room if we want things to look presentable again. Grrr. And BTW -- Matthew's movie went straight back to the movie store. He'll not be watching a movie "for a few minutes" again for a good long time (what were we thinking anyway --he's 2!)
In the meantime, I think we'll be singing a verse or two of "Love At Home" tonight for FHE.

Ha ha!! (Well, not that you have to patch the holes...but thinking of your FHE). My mom used to always start belting out "Let Us Oft Speak Kind Words To Each Other." The times that I hear that song now, it makes me cringe.

That is great. I totally underestimated Matthew. Me and Dave broke a door one time and tried to fix it ourselves. The old man found out in a few months and just about killed us. We got no credit for the attempted patch.

I'll just go with a great big AAAHHHKKKK! This kind of stuff is a pretty regular occurance at my house, so I know how stinking frustrating it is. (((Hugs))) and yah, we also sing a lot of "Love At Home."

As for the paint issue, go to the paint store(s) and pick up about a hundred sample chips that you think might be sort of close to the color. Pick them up from all different brands, too. Don't forget about the paint sections at Walmart, Kmart, and other places like that, too. Bring them all home, hold them up to your wall, and pick the one that is the closest match to your existing color. You'll be surprised at how close you'll get. Then take the selected chip to your favorite paint store and and have them custom match that chip. Most places have samples that you can buy for $3-4 which will be enough to cover the patched area. It's an area that is behind the door anyway, so you won't see a whole lot of it anyway. Worse case scenario, get a quart and just paint that one wall.

Both Lowe's and Home Deopt also sell steel drywall patches in various sizes (one of which is the door knob size) that you just stick to the wall with spackle and then spackle over the top of. Super easy and strong, too. I repaired a huge hole in one of my walls in my last house that way and it worked just lovely. No other prep work is needed. Oh, well, except no matter how you repair it you'll want to hit it with some of that canned spray texture stuff before you paint it. I've used gallons of the stuff and never primed any of it, BTW.

Gotta love kids!

That Laura comment was from Eric. And Diane is absolutely right about the paint and patches. Any paint department can match a color if you take it in (just a piece of the wall) and have them adjust color to it. I wouldn't repaint the whole thing.

Eric's totally right about the paint. Just take in a piece of the busted wall. Any paint department can mix up a color to match it. Just make sure you get the same gloss (satin / semi / whatever) so it doesn't look funky.

A little halloween story: A friend of mine had a little brother who rolled a 20 pound pumpkin down the stairs of their home. It bounced off the bottom step and lodged in the wall. At least you don't have a hole like that to fix.

That is hilarious.
