1. Matthew coloring the kitchen table with black permanent marker.
2. Door to door salespeople -- springtime really brings 'em out.
3. Carbon monoxide detector batteries determine they're dead and need to chirp at 2:00 a.m. (I determined it was the co detector after ripping the fire alarm off the wall)
4. Jury duty.

Welcome to Monday! Hope things have gotten better. Nail polish remover will take the marker off, but it may also take the varnish with it. Try Goof Off 2 (bright orange trigger spray bottle only available at Home Depot) if you have a good oil based varnish on it. Otheriwise, it will also strip the varnish. They may know of something else that will remove the marker but not the varnish, though.
Thanks Diana!
I was going to suggest acetone (nail polish remover) also. Yeah, it might (probably will) eat the varnish, but if you just dab it on a paper towel and wipe you might be OK and not take too much off.
I've heard good things about Goof Off, but I'm not sure what's in it so I don't know whether to recommend it or not. We have had surprising success on some weird things (markers and ink pens and crayons on couches) just by wiping with baby wipes. I'm not sure what they have on them, but that would be a cheap one to try, and they do work for some surprising things.
If all else fails, I'm buying an orbital sander in the next few days to help me in refinishing our stair rail and perhaps our beat up kitchen table. You're welcome to borrow it when I'm through with it if you want. It's quite easy to refinish big flat surfaces like tables when you have a sander. And it's amazing how good a newly-refinished wood table looks.
If you try to take a bottle of acetone through security at the courthouse, that might get you out of jury duty as well. It might land you in court, but at least you wouldn't be on the jury.
Good luck!
I guess I better come visit. When Kathleen got called up for jury duty, she just walked in and told them her that she had a Border Patrol Agent living with her, and they kicked her right out. Of course, that was federal court, and a drug case in Tucson, so about a 90% chance it came from Border Patrol.
Mr. Clean Magic eraser works pretty good on laminated paper! Since everyone else had an idea...but like they said - try a spot on the bottom of the wall first! Anyhow...jury duty - why do we wish it never was our turn?
