kirtland -- schoolhouse and whitney store
The red schoolhouse was "closed", but after awhile the missionaries offered to open it up and show us the inside. There wasn't much in there, but we got to feel how heavy those slates were that the kids used to use. I much prefer a notebook and pen.
This is the little stove that would have been used to heat the one room schoolhouse.
The Whitney store was awesome!
Just inside the front door was a checkers game table. The game pieces were cut up corn cobs! It would have been fun to sit down and play a game.
A look at how the store might have been stocked. It definitely had a bit of everything.
This is the original door and lock.
Upstairs we visited the room that J.S. would have used as an "office", or the headquarters of the church, during the time that he and Emma lived there (about a year). A bit smaller than the church office building today, don't you think? This is also the place where J.S. worked on the inspired revision of the bible. Many revelations were received here, including section 89. The table in this room is thought to be the original table used by J.S.
