The fourth graders study Utah history and then they present their class program based on that history. Yesterday it was showtime! Jacob was Jim Bridger, one of the well-known mountain men who first explored Utah territory and blazed trails for the mormon pioneers to follow. He had a small speaking part in the narration of the program. Every child had some kind of costume (indian, pioneer, or military), but those with speaking parts had to go the extra mile. We really lucked out with Jacob's costume. Mark has a friend from work whose lifelong hobby is being a mountain man and putting on rendezvous at elementary schools each year. He's collected some great stuff, and let us borrow this AWESOME outfit!
The hat is pretty simple -- broad brimmed with a rope around the head (which you can't see). The shirt is made of deer skin and is actually pretty heavy. It has two real ermine (kinda like mink) pelts that hang on the chest and two tails (I forget the animal) that hang in the center. There is a tobacco pouch hanging around his neck, and he is also sporting a possibles bag across his shoulder that has a real coyote head on it.
Across the other shoulder hangs a powder horn and ammunition bag.
Jacob did a great job and the whole program was very well done! I'm glad Jacob was a part of it!
