new jersey - bronx zoo

While Sarah and the big boys headed to the Mets game, Alicia, Zach, baby Joshua, Matthew and I headed out to the Bronx Zoo.  Wow -- what an awesome place!  We spent a few hours there yet probably only saw a third of what they had to offer. One of our first stops was the carousel where Matthew chose to hop on the back of a grasshopper for a ride.  Next stop was the butterfly exhibit.
There was a large greenhouse that you just walked into and butterflies were everywhere all around you.  A few of the butterflies were enjoying an afternoon snack of apple chunks.
Just outside the building were some fun little cutouts for Matthew and Zach to poke their heads into.

Next we wandered over to the giraffes.  It was so awesome to see lots of giraffes in their "natural" habitat eating fresh grass, trees, and shrubs. (Our local zoo is so pathetic with about 2 giraffes in a small dirt yard and barn with food brought in by zookeepers.)  They just looked so content and elegant out there grazing!
The gorillas were so fun to watch.  There were probably 15 to 20 of them in the exhibit.  They were active and playing, interacting even with the crowds!
We knew we wouldn't get to see everything, so we hopped aboard a train that took us for a quick ride through several exhibits.  This is the tiger -- what a good life!
The elephants were having a good time showering themselves with cool water on a very hot day.
 And here's the rhino!
The animals were all healthy and well cared for with lots of space to roam "free". We'd definitely like to visit here again -- there's so much we didn't get a chance to see!
